British born guitarist Snowy White (Born Terence Charles White) first became interested in music at the age of eleven when he was inspired by blues musicians Buddy Guy and B.B. King. He pursued his blues style in a number of bands however during the seventies Snowy made a reputation for himself playing numerous sessions for a wide variety of musicians such as Al Stewart, Cliff Richard and Peter Green. More famously Snowy toured as second guitarist with Pink Floyd augmenting the bands sound on the tours to promote the Animals and The Wall albums. By late 1979 however tiring of the session scene Snowy accepted the offer to join the rock band Thin Lizzy. Snowy recorded two albums with Thin Lizzy (Chinatown and Renegade) and completed a number of successful tours before deciding that the bands music and more importantly their lifestyle wasn't to his taste.

He formed his own band featuring drummer Richard Bailey and bassist Kuma Harada. With this band he recorded his first solo album entitled white Flames. A single lifted from that album (Bird Of Paradise) became a surprise hit reaching the British top ten in early 1983.

From here Snowy White recorded a number of blues based albums all of which were warmly received by the blues audience his records are aimed at.

This live DVD was filmed in March 2004 and captures Snowy and his band The White Flames in tremendous form. The performance is full of the tasteful modern blues we have come to expect from Snowy White and the set list contains not only original material from Snowy White but also selected covers including two Peter Green songs (I Loved Another Woman and Black Magic Woman) and an incredible interpretation of the Jimi Hendrix song Little Wing.

Initial quantities of this DVD come as a double package containing the DVD and a bonus audio CD of the concert making it a desirable package for fans of Snowy White

Reviews

In our Winter 2006 edition you could read a couple of reviews of the “Live From London” DVD releases. One of them was a review of Snowy White live at the Camden Palace Theatre. Almost at the same time this guitar player released another DVD. A recording of a show which he and his band The White Flames did at The Galaxy in Vilnius March last year. The gig was done to promote his latest release “The Way It Is…”. So it was obvious that a lot of tracks from this album were performed. The opening track from the album was also the opening piece on this DVD. The blues track “No stranger to the blues”. The latin tune with a lot of Santana influences was also on the menu. They called it “What I’m searching for”. Also the jazz rock tune “This time of my life” was perfectly done and came very close to the version as it was done for “The Way It Is…”. The highlight of Snowy’s last album was also very well done. “Angel inside you” has besides latin influences a lot of progressive rock elements. Other songs with a lot of prog influences must certainly be mentioned. Good examples are “The answer”, “Land of plenty” and Lucky star”. Three covers could also be enjoyed. The well known Jimi Hendrix instrumental “Little wing”, several times live performed by Toto, and two Peter Green numbers. The first one “I loved another woman” was a part of the live show and the second one “Black magic woman” was included as an extra bonus video. Funny enough was it done at the same gig. Only this time the band moved along with the original recording from Snowy’s last album. The line-up for this show included several well known musicians. Musician who are briljant on their instruments but are a bit dull on a live stage. One of them is Alquin’s Walter Latupeirissa. He got a solo spot to perform his own piece”Terpisah” on the 5 strings bass guitar. Also keyboard player Max Middleton got a solo spot on the piano during “Blues is the road”. Drummer Richard Bailey was welcomed back in the band after several years. His contributions certainly bring some extra to this live performance. A live performance which does not get extra votes for a brilliant light show. Everything looks very sober. Only the musicians themselves shine. It’s great fun to watch Snowy White playing guitar with his thumbs. Besides the already mentioned bonus video another extra is included. The same concert can also be heard on an audio disc. Certainly a fine feature. Most of all for the people who don’t have the time to watch the whole concert on DVD. This new DVD once more shows that Snowy White still is a great guitarist nowadays and not only back in the eighties during the Live From London gig.
