Deep Sea 4. Rainbow Meditation. Australian beatnik Daevid Allen was a founder member of Britain's earliest psychedelic band, Soft Machine. He departed from the band after the release of their first classic single Love Makes Sweet Music. He was then banned from Britain, he settled in Paris where he formed the psychedelic rock collective Gong in 1970. The band appeared on stage in their "pothead pixie hats", with Allen playing "glissando guitar", his partner poet Gilli Smyth on "space whisper" vocals and a combination of tape loops. Gong created a mixture of ethereal soundscapes mixed with trippy psychedelic lyrics. Various incarnations followed, including Mother Gong, New York Gong and Gongmaison.Musicians included Robert Wyatt, Pip Pyle, Steve Hillage, Didier Malherbe, Tim Blake, Mike Howlett, Pierre Moerlen, with Allen making an album with Shimmy Disc boss Kramer in 1993. 1994 saw original members of Gong reunite for their 25th anniversary. The sell out shows at London's Forum were recorded for a double cd ( VPGAS101CD ). Daevid continues to record and tour as a solo artist and as a member of Gong. The band are touring Europe in the spring of 2000. For this recording, Daevid Allen is joined by Gong sidekick Gilli Smyth and Mother Gong member Harry Williamson. This ambient set was originally issued on the AMP label in 1990 and instantly deleted. It has now been remixed and digitally remastered, with an extra track Deep Sea recorded by Daevid in Deya in 1975. Reviews By gum, it's a while since I've heard 'owt by the ol' pot head pixie! I must confess to being a bit of a sucker for Allen's style of guitar gliss as well. On many of Gong's albums, the highlights for me have always been the ambient styled gliss - of which there's an abundance here. Imagine a backdrop of Eastern sounding instruments that lay foundations from which the gliss guitar wafts majestically whilst the odd space whisper floats on by. Pure relaxational stuff. The album was originally released on the AMP label but for some reason was instantly deleted! He's joined here by Gilli Smythe and Harry Williamson (who's worked with Anthony Phillips and Mother Gong), and together they produce some superb ambient music. The album lasts for just under an hour, and is best listened too whilst in a relaxed state - it isn't the album to put on to get people up and dancing! This new release also features an extra track, Deep Sea - which gives the album four tracks! A truly beautiful aural journey. | |
